Chapter 11 - An Island of Wonders
"Since their abrupt departure from the Empire, we find little in the way of recorded history about the exploits of the mages until their fateful rediscovery. To describe the encounter as anything less than pivotal would be doing it an injustice. Yet, with hindsight, for all the good that came of it, one could only wish we had set about things a little differently."
E. Bludworthe - âHidden Historiesâ
With the hovering ship towing them in its wake, the newly appointed helmsman of the Crystal Rose had very little to do, yet Eric noticed that the man was intensely focused on the wheel. Others from the new ship had taken various positions on the Rose, while her original crew had been confined to their quarters aside from the Captain, who was currently drying himself off on the deck. He was still wary of Eric, who had wandered off while Mr Claye explained their situation in more detail.
Not wishing to be in anyone's way or to cause further alarm, Eric had found a little spot at the front of the ship, hidden away behind some empty barrels, and had tucked himself by these to stare up at the sky as they travelled. Despite the insanity of the avum, he found the soft blue tones of the clear sky to be quite calming. At least it was until the woman in the black robe suddenly loomed over him, as though she was an angry rain cloud in an otherwise perfect pass.
"I tell thee truly; there is no risk to thee from us. We are a civilised people and would see no harm come to a babe."
"Huh?" was all Eric could manage.
"My words are strange to thee? Thou lacks comprehension?"
"Sorry, I really don't know what you are saying."
The woman jumped easily over the barrels and wiggled into the space next to Eric. It might have been a more reassuring gesture were it not for the scabbard at her side jabbing into him, accidentally, when she sat down.
"Ouch!" Eric cried out.
The woman looked embarrassed and quickly readjusted her belt. "My apologies, young one."
"It's alright, better than having my head cut off again!" Eric smiled weakly.
"In order to overcome our linguistic discrepancy, might thee permit myself to obtain that which is lost?"
Eric continued to stare blankly at her. The woman mouthed out some words, though there was no sound behind them. When finished, she spoke aloud once more, though this time pausing after each word and adding gestures to clarify her meaning.
"Us. Speaking. Hard. May I. Learning?"
"Um, sure, I guess. Though I have only been going to school for a few cycles myself, so I don't think I would be..."
Eric was cut off mid-sentence when she practically head-butted him, bringing her forehead in contact with his. Eric's vision was filled with a bright light before returning to normal. Instinctively, he pulled away from the woman, and she offered no resistance..
"Sorry, I hope I did not cause you much alarm. It was the easiest way for us to be able to talk properly," she said.
